Fall is a really exciting (albeit overwhelming) time for fashion lovers- we’re putting our summer wardrobes in storage (for me this means the glamorous task of stuffing things into bins under my bed) and our favorite places to shop are getting new arrivals every.single.day. Fashion Week always makes me feel like I need to up my wardrobe game.

My one constant struggle every Fall is finding a dress that’s flattering but more subtle than your average holiday party look (aka not covered in glitter). I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again: I’m not typically a dress girl, which makes things even more challenging. The standard fit and flare dresses do not flatter my petite frame, and make me look way too young.

I know slip dresses are typically reserved for warmer temps, but I think they can be utilized as layering pieces once cooler weather arrives. I paired mine with an oversized sweater, bike shorts underneath (this slip dress is 100% sheer so layers are necessary), and boots. Belting a look like this at the waist gives it some shape. We’re all prone to wearing our oversized sweaters with leggings or jeans, but mixing it up like this was a fun alternative that I’m definitely going to be repeating this season.

Once it gets cooler, I’ll pair this look with my favorite over the knee boots and a shearling lined jean jacket and call it a day. I linked some of my picks for oversized sweaters below, along with the boots I’m wearing in these photos which I am obsessed with.
